Where Does Java Coffee Come From?
Java Coffee originates from the Indonesian island of the same name. The plants were introduced by the Dutch in 1699. However, in the 1880s, a disease called Coffee Rust decimated crops, forcing farmers out of the lowlands and onto higher plateaus to continue cultivation. The move turned out to be a tremendous success because the high climatic conditions have since lent themselves to the Coffee’s unique flavour.
Java is now Indonesia’s largest Coffee producer. It is best known for Arabica Coffee Beans, which are often stored for two to three years to allow them to develop a fuller, richer taste. Other Coffee-growing areas in the country include Sulawesi, Flores, East Timor, Bali and Sumatra, with plantations covering an estimated 1.24 million hectares of Indonesia. 90% of beans come from smallholder farmers
